- When you wear sunscreen every day, you reduce your risk of skin cancer by 50%.
- UV rays from the sun can cause premature wrinkles, pigmentation and dull skin.
- It’s never too early or late to start applying sunscreen!
Science behind skin
Think of your skin as a super expensive phone, the sunscreen, which you will positively apply after reading this article, is the case in which you put your phone. In simple terms, sunscreen protects your skin just as a case protects your phone.
The sun is not your friend. Exposure to UV radiation from the sun ages your skin. What you see after a long day out in the sun, is not a “healthy glow”. A healthy glow doesn’t exist. What does exist is the premature ageing and the increase in the risk of skin problems.
What Zoey thinks…
After reading the basics and science, Zoey has questions about the right kind of sunscreen for her. Worry not, Zoey, Bake Me Beauty is always there to save the day. Here, we have answers to all of Zoey’s questions.
First of all, Zoey, UV stands for ‘ultraviolet radiation’ which is energy that comes directly from the sun and is against everything you want your skin to be like. It has also been termed a human carcinogen, that is, the term given to any substance or radiation that is cancer-causing.
- The A in UVA stands for ageing ray. This penetrates deep into your skin because of its long wavelength. Besides its role as a human carcinogen, this ray attacks the collagen in your skin and acts as an ageing catalyst. Feel free to demonstrate absolute loathing for this substance which steals your youth, I know I hate it.
- The B stands for burning and because of its shorter wavelength, it penetrates your skin only on a superficial level, phew. This is the only better thing about UVB as it is the main cause of skin problems and the oh-so-hated sunburns which ruin vacations.
Considering we want neither ageing nor burning for your skin, we would suggest sunscreens that have protection against both UVA and UVB.
Look for a sunscreen labelled, ‘ broad spectrum protection for protection against both UVA and UVB.
SPF stands for ‘sun protection factor’. It measures how effective the sunscreen is at blocking UV rays. There are different models for measuring SPF.
Zoey, your unprotected skin starts to burn after 10 minutes of direct sun exposure. SPF 15 will give you circa 2.5 hours of sun protection. Hence, the golden formula –
SPF 15 x 10 Minutes = 150 Minutes
- Strength of the formula
SPF 15 blocks 93 to 95 per cent of UVB rays; SPF 30 blocks 97 per cent of UVB rays; SPF 50 blocks 98 per cent of UVB rays and so forth.
Your skin burning and turning red is an indication of damage from UVB rays. These signs might not be present but the illusion that it is safe is just that, an illusion.
What is PA and + symbol?
PA is a rating developed in Japan to determine the amount of UVA protection a product offers. Japanese researchers developed the PA system by converting the existing PDD (Persistent Pigment Darkening) rating system. Zoey, you will see different ratings –
PA+ Low UVA protection, PA++ Moderate UVA protection or PA+++ High UVA protection
